Teacher: Delia De Leon, Kindergarten teacher at Metcalf Elementary, Houston Texas.
Delia sent us her student’s Eileen Salgado’s poster drawing. Ms. De Leon explains that Eileen is from El Salvador and the idea behind the contest’s theme was drawing her self-portrait dreaming of her country and how she can be of help to her culture in the future.
She dreams about the national bird; turquoise-browed Motmot and flower; Flower of Izote.
She painted paper with watercolor techniques, did a paper weaving for the blanket and drew her self-portrait, national bird, flower and flag. 12 x 18”/Mixed media (Crayon, watercolor, collage)

Teacher: Claudia Kechkian, The John Cooper School, The Woodlands, Texas.
Pintando como Picasso
Activity based on the Tertulia presented by Cheryl Fuentes, integrated in a lesson on Diego Velazquez.

El Altar Virtual, Día de los muertos
Teacher: Evelyn Cantorna, St. John’s School, Houston, Texas.
We would like to highlight Señora Cantorna´s project, from St. John’s School, in Houston. She has asked her 8th grade students to honor and remember a beloved person in a Virtual Altar “El Altar Virtual” and add a photo of the person, photos or images of five important things for that person, and three/four symbols of the offerings “las ofrendas” as by the Mexican tradition. As we went through Sra. Cantorna’s students projects we were thrilled to see how they honored their grandparents and great grandparents, their lacrosse coach, relatives, athletes, and even their pets. No doubt, Señora Cantorna has taken the “Día de los Muertos” to the next level, by making her students understand the true meaning of its essence. Congrats to Mrs. Cantorna for motivating her students with such creativity! ¡Felicitaciones Sra. Cantorna, por motivar a sus alumnos con tanta creatividad! Thank you for sharing your creativity with AATSP Texas-Brazos! Here is the link to some of her students’ work.
