Teaching Interactional Competence in the L2 classroom: Why and How

                                                          Aymara Boggiano

Aymara Boggiano was born in Paris, France and grew up in Venezuela. She received a B.A. in French and a M.A. in Romance Languages and Literatures from The Ohio State University. She has been teaching Foreign Languages for 35 years. She started as her professional career as a Spanish and French teacher at Isidore Newman School in New Orleans and she also taught Spanish at Loyola and Tulane Universities. While living in Venezuela she taught English as a second language at the Universidad José Antonio Paéz, and after moving to Texas she became coordinator of the Spanish Language Program at the University of Houston and later at University of North Texas. While at U of H she worked at The Center for Teaching Excellence as Coordinator of the Division for TA Training.

She works now at the Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication (CLIC) at Rice University where she teaches Spanish and works with the language team to create Authentic Materials and Research based lesson plans to teach Interactional Competence.

Between 2011­ – 2014 Aymara was the Co­PI and recipient of a generous four-year grant from United Engineering Foundation to produce “Invenciones de la Inventiva,” the Spanish version of Dr. J. Lienhard’s NPR series “Engines of our Ingenuity.” Considerable work and effort by many people involved lead up to a web page that contains authentic materials, lesson, and activities created from Lienhard’s episodes. These episodes were broadcasted in Spanish in the series “Invenciones de la Inventiva” on KNTU a radio station based in Denton Tx.

Her recent interests include research­-based learning, language pedagogy, curriculum and course design, second language and heritage language acquisition.
